Arizona has just received a commit from four-star lineman Trent Spurgeon…
Stock Report: OG Trent Spurgeon
STOCK REPORT Prospect: Trent Spurgeon High School: Owasso (OK) High School Previous Projected Position: LT New Projected Position: RT Stock: Down Current Midland Rank: #34 - Estimated Rank: Top 100 Committed: Arizona Scout.com ranked OT Trent Spurgeon #34 in the Midland Region after reviewing his film. On tape, Spurgeon appeared big and athletic. He played with a nasty disposition; finishing blocks and playing until the whistle. His 6'7 frame looked like he could add weight without losing athleticism. His footwork was good, he is well coached, and has upside. After seeing Spurgeon in person, Scout.com is not as high on him as we previously were. His overall athleticism was over estimated. Up close, you see that he is not a natural bender and at 6'7 he struggles to stay low. He often times loses the leverage battle and because he does not have a solid power base, he doesn't get any push off the ball. At the major college level, not playing with proper pad level will lead tackles for loss and tackles for no gain. Spurgeon does not lack strength however, it is harder to teach pad level than it is to hit the weight room. When releasing and going to the second level, Spurgeon does not show the explosiveness to cut off backers that are trying to scrape across his face. When he does get there, he has the footwork, strength, and technique to stay on and finish blocks. He does a decent job protecting the pass but at times he lacks a quick set and has a hard time stopping the speed rush. He has adequate footwork and a solid punch, he just needs to be more consistent. Spurgeon still plays with intensity and with a mean streak. He is better suited to play RT than he is LT and if he can correct his pad level, he still has the ability to be an impact player. It is for these reasons, Spurgeon's stock is down.
