Santa Monica, Calif. - It was a big night for Bakersfield as they beat Santa Monica 43-0 on Saturday. Quarterback Logan Kilgore had a night for the ages, and 4- Star Maurice Hayes and Tyrone Crawford (Boise commit) anchored a stout defensive line.

Bakersfield has been rolling through the early part of its schedule heading for a showdown this week with perennial power El Camino on Saturday. The latest victim of the Bakersfield onslaught was Santa Monica on Saturday night.

Having lost its leading rusher, Andre Smith, earlier in the season, it was time for a green, but talented quarterback Logan Kilgore (6-1/195) to step up.

Kilgore is an interesting story in that he didn't play much quarterback in high school. He didn't enroll as a full time student in Bakersfield until after the season last year, so he began spring practice as a greyshirt freshman.

Bakersfield against Santa Monica was the 6th junior college game I've attended in southern California this year so far. I've seen bounce backs like Matt Simms of El Camino (Louisville) and Byron Ingram of Citrus (Georgia Tech). I've seen traditional quarterback havens like Pasadena and Mt. San Antonio. And to this point, none of the players I've seen throws a better ball than Logan Kilgore.

Kilgore's night was virtually flawless. A 14 of 15 night for 244 yards and three touchdowns backs up that thought. Kilgore throws a terrific ball over the middle on a post or seam route, and he throws accurately on the run.

Anytime a quarterback has the kind of night Kilgore had, he's getting some help from his offensive line and his receivers. Rishard Matthews (6-0/205), who signed with Oregon in 2007, has a lot of talent, and William Randle (5-11/190) should find a spot on a college roster next year as well.

There's an old saying in football that offense sells tickets but defense wins championships. If that's the case, then Bakersfield should be entertaining AND competing for titles. The defensive line duo of Boise State commitment Tyrone Crawford (6-4/260) and Maurice Hayes (6-2/315) anchor a stout Renegade defense.

Crawford at end has the size needed to play on the strong side and be an asset against the run and is quick enough to make his presence felt in the passing game. Hayes is a strong interior lineman with a quick first step that can occupy double teams or penetrate into the backfield.

Here is a look at these players in action from the Bakersfield / Santa Monica game from Saturday night.
