Scouting Report: OLB Courtney Gaston
Profile: Courtney Gaston High School: Fort Gibson (OK) High School Height: 6'5 Weight: 225 Committed: Arkansas SCOUTING REPORT Courtney Gaston has the body you like to see in a high level linebacker. He is thickly built with long arms and legs. His physique matches his speed, power, and strength and he doesn't just look the part, he plays it. Gaston is an aggressive downhill attacking linebacker. He does not hesitate or wait on the ball. He is very decisive. He diagnosis a play and hits the hole hard. This makes him a great blizter. When he is not attacking vertically, he is running sideline to sideline. When unimpeded, he is fluid and natural in his lateral movement. He can be very rangy. When the traffic inside the box is thick, he struggles to cross face because he tends to play high and doesn't use his hands all that well. He doesn't catch the block so he gets off and gets to where his is going. It just takes time because he doesn't use his hands to disengage. He would much rather beat you with speed. When he gets to the ball carrier, Gaston runs through the tackle. He needs to bend his knees and come up through the hit (for more explosiveness) instead of running chest exposed into the hit. However, he wraps up the ball carrier and seldomly misses tackles. He is just as good tackling in space as he is in the box. He takes great angles to the football and close quickly. Because he tends to play high, he looks awkward in man coverage. He is not really a liability but he may struggle against speedy slot WRs. He is much better in zone where he is more instinctive and can roam.
