Bulldogs, Rebels Battle
Taurice King, the 6-foot-1, 226-pound three-star linebacker from Yazoo City High School in Yazoo City, Ms., has narrowed his choices down to two schools – Mississippi State and Ole Miss. King, ranked as the No. 33 middle linebacker in the country by Scout.com, has scholarship offers from both Mississippi State and Ole Miss, as well as Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss. He says the Bulldogs and Rebels are both recruiting him the hardest and he's already visited both unofficially. "I really like coach Tyrone Nix," he said about the Rebels defensive coordinator/linebackers coach. "He's a great defensive coach and has done a real good job at Ole Miss. "I think I could learn a lot from him," King said. King attended a camp at Ole Miss during the summer. He also attended camps at Mississippi State and Southern Miss. The Rebels are only two hours from his house and he admits that's a big factor. "I'd really like to stay close to home," he said. "Both of these schools are within like three hours driving. "Ole Miss has a great program and it's still getting better," he said. "They are a top 25 team and it's a team that has some pretty good tradition too." Another coach that King likes is Mississippi State's linebacker coach, Carl Torbush. "He's cool," he said. "He's had like 21 linebackers in his career go pro. He knows what he's talking about." King says he'd like to go to a couple of Bulldog and Rebel games this season unofficially, but hasn't been to any yet. He doesn't plan on making a decision until after the season. "I may wait until February," he said. "I just want to play," King said. "I want to go and get on the field early. "I also want to have something to fall back on," he said. "And I want to get my degree." Yazoo City High School has a 2-3 record and King says he's had two sacks. He finished his junior season with 111 tackles and seven sacks. "I have good sideline-to-sideline speed," King said. "I hit hard and I'm a good tackler." He says he can bench 315-pounds, squat 500 and has a 32-inch vertical jump. "I want to get faster," he said. "I want to get my 40-speed (claims a 4.6) down to a 4.5 or better." King plans on majoring in physical therapy and reports a 2.7 core GPA and a 15 ACT, which he will retake in October.
