Smith Shows Great Poise

Philadelphia, Pa., signal caller Tony Smith had a tough task to deal with on Friday night as he went up against a powerful St. Joseph’s Prep defense. While he may not have put up jaw-dropping numbers in the game, he was efficient and more importantly, safe with the ball.

Tony Smith, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Father Judge High School is a player that has already received some letters from Temple and Pittsburgh and when we get to talk to him this week we’ll have more from him and his coach on his recruiting, however for now, Scout.com talks about his performance on Friday night against the St. Joe’s Hawks.

Smith immediately had two things working against him in this game. First, the Prep was bringing rushers off the edge from a stand-up position all night and the blitz was not getting picked up, so he had little time to set his feet and throw. Secondly, when he did throw his receivers simply did a poor job for him, dropping seven passes on the night on a generous count.

What Smith did do was show the poise, pocket presence, mobility and leadership to keep his team together when they were down 28-0 and almost led them back to tie the game late in the 4th quarter. He only had 73 passing yards on 28 attempts, however he did have two touchdown passes in the game to Curtis Wortham and Kevin Leneghan. He also showed solid mobility, escaping what could have been a number of sacks and picking up 32 yards on the night.
