Barker Explains Switch
Blake Barker talked to Scout.com tonight about why he chose to take back his verbal commitment from Stanford and give it to Harvard. "From the beginning when I was looking at schools I was always looking for the best balance of football and academics, but I think I overlooked where I'd actually be going to school in terms of location," Barker said. "After all of the recruiting hype died down I thought about where I wanted to be for the next four or five years and when I really thought about it I decided being closer to home at Harvard was the best decision for me." "During the process I realized there isn't going to be a perfect situation and you're never going to find a complete package, so when I looked at playing at a different competition level it wasn't a big deal to me because people have gone to the league from Harvard. NFL teams are going to find you no matter where you are and for me, it was about education and being close to home. Harvard isn't the perfect fit either, there isn't going to be a perfect fit, but it was the best fit for me." "My parents have always loved both Stanford and Harvard and it's just a perfect situation for all of us now because they can be a part of my college experience now and be at my games." "One of the things that made it so hard for me to leave was because I had such a great relationship with the coaches at Stanford. I can't say enough about the coaching staff there and I know that program is going in the right direction. I obviously liked a lot about Stanford so it was tough, but in the end I just realized going across the country wasn't what I wanted to do."
