Scout's Take: Colorado State WR commit
What to Like: Jay James is a big, strong, physical wide receiver. Bigger receivers are becoming more and more common in today's college game and James fits the bill. He can block, make the tough catches in traffic, and presents mismatch problems against smaller corners because of his size and style of play. He also plays on defense and is active on that side of the ball. He might actually have more upside as an outside linebacker at the college level. What may concern you: While he has ideal size, he doesn't have ideal speed. He doesn't separate from opposing DB's in high school so don't expect him to do too much of that at the next level. He'll be a possession type receiver. He's limited on his production levels as well. After sitting out as a junior because of transfer rules, he's only caught a few passes so far this season so his body of work at the prep level at receiver isn't very much. He still has a lot to prove. Bottom Line: Colorado State recruits the Orlando area as hard as any other program in America and they just landed another solid two-star prospect. James, whose brother plays for the Rams now, could end up playing on either side of the ball but he's a pretty good athlete with some nice upside for the next level.
