Film Evaluation: New UF Commit
Profile: Pop Saunders Position: Athlete Location: Deland, Fla. High School: Deland Height: 5-foot-11 Weight: 180 pounds Recruiting: Florida has had the pleasure of getting many of their top targets in recent years and Saunders jumped at the opportunity to be a Gator when it presented itself. The offer arrived via fax on Monday and he was ready to commit when he found out about the news. Film Evaluation I have not had the opportunity to see Saunders live yet, but I will within the next 12 months. It is best to see guys live in practice, camps, games, 7on7 tournaments, or in some fashion because that is the best way to see the total package. I will know more about Saunders when that time comes, but here is what I see off the film I have evaluated him on. Saunders is explosive first of all. He really accelerates well and gets to top speed in a hurry. He is a short strider with very quick feet and he moves with great fluidity while changing directions, making guys miss, closing on the ball, or running away from defenders. Speed is a big weapon of his. I saw a lot of toughness too. He is not afraid to lower the shoulder when running the ball and he delivered some pop when making a tackle on defense as well. He is not all that big, but he plays with no fear and very physical on both sides of the ball. It is clear that he is an athlete on the football field. He could end up on either side of the ball in Gainesville and the UF coaches may have to fight over him when he gets on campus. He is slippery with the ball in his hands and could be a slot receiver, change of pace back, or corner for the Gators. No matter where he plays, he will likely get a long look on special teams. He is very good in space, he is shifty, and he is a threat to take it the distance any time he touches the football. Size could be a small concern, but seeing him in person would tell me more. I have seen him listed at 6-feet some places, but he does not look that height on film. He definitely shows the toughness it will take though to make an impact in the SEC. His closing speed is another strength and he will go up and get the ball when on the defensive side. He changes direction well, he maintains his speed, and he reminds me a lot of Joe Haden. Saunders is not the biggest guy, but he plays bigger, he plays tough, and he pays with no fear. The Gators got themselves an athlete in Saunders. Like Haden, he scores a lot of touchdowns in high school, but he shows all the signs of being able to make the transition to full time corner if that is what the UF staff wants. His initial burst would be great at corner when coming out of his breaks and closing in on the ball. Either way, Saunders will give them options because of his quickness, playmaking ability, and athleticism.
