Scout's Take: Florida CB commit
What to Like: Pop Saunders is a tremendous football player. That's the first thing you notice about him and it's one of the first things Deland coach Kevin Pettis will tell you. He never leaves the field -- he lines up at cornerback, running back, and returns kicks/punts for the Bulldogs. He's very elusive in the return game and has that ability to make the first guy miss a lot of times. At corner, he plays with good instincts and ball skills and does a nice job locking down that side of the football field. Offensively, he's one of the leading rushers in all of central Florida and runs with good instincts and makes a lot of people miss in the open field. What may concern you: Even though he has a solid build at around 185 pounds, Saunders lacks ideal height. At 5-foot-10, he has average size for a major college corner prospect and he doesn't have elite speed. He's more quick than he is fast. His football instincts make him play faster than he is, though. Bottom Line: Saunders wasted no time in making the commitment to the school he's always wanted to play for. He committed less than 24 hours after getting his offer from the Gators. He's an excellent football player and should be one of the state's top cornerback prospects for the Class of 2011. He'll likely start out as a high three-star or low four-star prospect. The Gators did a good job of locking him down very early in the process.
