Hawkins Reflects on Season, Looks to Future
Donald Hawkins profile "This year didn't go so good," said Donald of his final prep season. "We got knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. We lost to Cleveland 28-6. I thought we had a chance to go farther this year. It was real disappointing." Hawkins expects to extend his playing career in college, but he admits it was difficult to walk off the high school gridiron for the final time. "It felt real bad," said the talented offensive lineman. "I was planning for us to go farther in the playoffs. I tried to play every game this year like it was my last one. I tried to tell the young guys that the seasons come and go before you know it, so you have to play hard every week." Hard play was the name of the game for Hawkins and he believes his efforts will soon yield to some official offers. "I still have the verbal offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, USM and Arkansas State," said Donald. "They say after I take the ACT that I will get a real offer." One of the schools talking about an offer, Ole Miss, will get to host Hawkins this weekend. The next two weeks will allow Donald to see the Rebels in action twice. "I am going to Ole Miss this weekend when they play LSU," said Donald. "I am going to try to get over to Mississippi State when they play Ole Miss too. I am looking forward to going to those games." Mississippi State has been in regular contact with the talented offensive lineman and he believes the Bulldogs may be the first to come through with a bona fide scholarship offer. "I talked to Coach (Melvin) Smith," said Donald. "He told me that he got my transcript after the first nine weeks and that he was impressed. He said that he is going to get with Coach Mullen and let him know how I was doing. He told me to keep working hard and things would work out for me." Hawkins will be taking the ACT next month and he believes once he gets a good score on record that the offers will come. "I feel pretty good about recruiting right now, but I will feel a lot better once I take the ACT," explained Donald. "I am trying to make an 18 or better. Once I do I feel like a lot of these bigger schools will go ahead and offer me."
