UGA's trying to hang on
"I met with Coach [John] Lilly for a while today at the school and it was my first time talking with him face to face," said Deon Rogers. "He has taken over recruiting me for Georgia until they hire a new linebackers coach. I talked to him a few times last week and he seems like a nice guy." Lilly may be nice, but he is still not John Jancek. Jancek, the former linebackers coach at UGA was dismissed by Mark Richt almost a week ago and he was a big reason why Rogers committed to the Dawgs over the summer. Now Jancek is gone and that has him re-evaluating everything. "I am still committed and I like Coach Lilly, but I don't know who I will be playing for at Georgia right now. I want to be close to my position coach and know him well and I had that close relationship with Coach Jancek." "I trusted him, I knew what it was like to play for him because of my time at their camp, and we just had a good understanding." "With him gone, I am just waiting to see what is going to happen next. Coach Lilly told me that they still want me and that they just want me to give them time to get a coach in." Georgia was also recruiting Jeff Luc of Treasure Coast and he and Rogers are very close friends. Rogers has always said it would be great to play with Jeff in college and over the weekend, Luc committed to Florida State. Does that give the 6-foot-3, 198 pound linebacker even more to think about? "It would be great to go to FSU with Jeff, but I really like Georgia and I feel at home up there," said the Port St. Lucie athlete. "Jeff wants me to make the best decision for myself, so I am going to look at Florida State and all that, but I am sticking with Georgia for now." Mark Richt has to like the sound of that. Rogers received a call from the UGA head coach the night the three defensive coaches were let go. That showed Rogers he was important to the Bulldogs. "It really did mean something to me when Coach Richt called me last week. He just wanted me to konw about the situation, he asked me to give him a chance to hire someone new, and he just wanted me to know that I was still wanted by them." "It was cool because Coach Richt is such a nice guy. I like him like I liked Coach Jancek, but I just haven't gotten to know him as well. How I connect with the new linebackers coach will really help me with my decision, but I plan to wait and see who they hire before doing anything else." Rogers plans to visit FSU and Purdue officially. LSU is another school he is still considering. He finished with 93 tackles and 3 sacks in 2009.
