Clairton High School beat Bishop McCort High School in a defensive slugfest for the Class A Pennsylvania State Championship at Hershey Park Stadium this afternoon and Scout.com took some time to watch some of the individual prospects in the game.
Desimon Green
is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound junior who is playing at both quarterback and defensive end for Clairton this season and while it was a quiet first quarter, the Clairton staff put the ball into Green’s hands in the second quarter and let him work his magic from the quarterback position. He isn’t a polished passer as it’s his first year playing at the position, however he is very athletic, is a threat to run the ball and does have a solid arm. He carried the ball five straight times in the second quarter to move his team down the field and completed a key fourth down pass to
Pittsburgh
-bound
Kevin Weatherspoon
to pick up a first down and keep things moving. Unfortunately, on third and goal he overthrew a wide open Weatherspoon in the end zone and the Bears had to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Trent Coles to put them up 3-0. Green also did a great job in the first half on the defensive side of the ball from his end position and is a load to handle on the outside. In the second half, McCort really put some pressure on Green and he did fold a bit, to the point where he was yanked for an offensive series. His passing became pretty erratic and he was holding onto the ball too long. He finished the day with 69 passing yards and 26 rushing yards, but played a very solid game overall on both sides of the ball.
Kevin Weatherspoon, a Pittsburgh commitment, is a fine wide receiver and while he’s only a two-star prospect he’s the type of player that always gets open, has great hands and really adjusts to the ball well. He also did a great job in the game giving Desimon Green a target by breaking off his routes and coming back to the quarterback. He made an outstanding leaping grab along the sideline in the first quarter and ended the half with three receptions for 56 yards. Weatherspoon actually sealed the game with an interception late and also played well on both sides of the ball.
Deontae Howard
was bottled for most of the game, but the senior running back popped off an 80-yard touchdown run which blew the game open to 15-3 and finished with 148 yards on 24 carries.
Scout.com congratulates the Clairton Bears on their championship and also Bishop McCort as they played outstanding on special teams and defense today. Very outstanding.
