Crab Bowl: Offensive Standouts - Washington
The 2009 Maryland Crab Bowl had several standout performances. We continue with this year's coverage looking at the best offensive performers from the Washington Team. Quarterback - None of the quarterbacks really separated themselves as a standout but they each had some good plays. Taylor Henry, Rudy Johnson and Jerry Lovelocke were steady throughout the game. Henry is a big strong quarterback that can really fling the ball. Johnson has a nice blend of passing and running skills. Lovelocke will only get better with his 6'5" frame and long arm whip. They avoided the bad plays and helped their team to victory. Running Backs - Brian Lucas had a spectacular 65 yard touchdown run that left many impressed. He broke several tackles, made a great cut and then outran the entire defense to the end zone. Each time he ran the ball it was exciting because of the effort and toughness he plays with on every step. Travis Thomas ran hard and showed some good acceleration. Marcus Coker had some good runs including a 30+ yard touchdown that was called back because of a penalty. Khalek Shepherd had a few good returns showing great quickness and cutting ability. We also must mention Austin Bailey, who played fullback, as he had some great run blocks and protected the quarterback. Wide Receivers - Not many passes were attempted so this was a quiet group overall production wise. E.J. Scott was impressive throughout the game. He didn't have many balls come his way but made the most of his opportunities. He found some open areas for his quarterbacks. Paul Phillips, the team's only true tight end, is a big target and also blocks well. He runs good routes and has some athleticism. Offensive Line - The line was led by Arie Kouandjio. He went from blocking a guy with speed one down to a bigger guy with power the next. He performed well getting downfield on the screens. Jonathan Cortez showed some good technique for a big guy. He made several key blocks as his team shifted their focus to the run game. Nathaniel Clarke was another player that showed well. He is a big body with very good feet and good upper body strength. Kicker - John Carpenter had what would end up being the game winning field goal from about 40 yards out to put his team up by ten points late in the game. Between that and his kickoffs he displayed very good leg strength.
