Top JR recruit takes in Cotton Bowl
Posted Jan 6, 2010
Arguably Mississippi's top '11 prospect really did not know what to expect when he left from Jackson (MS) to Dallas (TX) with two of his teammates for the Cotton Bowl. Now he is itching to play in a New Year's Day Bowl himself.
"Man, that was my first bowl game to ever go to. It was exciting," added
. "Ole Miss' defense played outstanding. Their offense needs a little work but their defense just dominated. I just hope I get to play in one of these big bowl games when I get to college."
What was the Scout.com Top 100 JR prospect keying in on during the game?
"I really wanted to watch their (OM) receivers play. I know all of their good ones are leaving this and next year so they need a couple of good receivers to come in there. That is why I think it is a good fit for me. They also like to throw the ball deep and mix it up. That is what I like about Ole Miss. I like the routes they run and how many spots are going to be open by the time I get to college. I also like watching the Wild Rebel and the post routes they run. I saw #10 (
) run a lot of post routes. That fits me good."
Singleton has an older brother that is a freshman at the University of Mississippi, and he is constantly trying to sell Ole Miss to Tobias.
"He loves it up there. He tells me how friendly everybody is up there, and he is always trying to get me up there to come stay with him. He wants me to come up there and hang out with his friends.so he can see how everybody is up there. I have been up there a couple of times to stay with him, and I really like it up there a lot. I am thinking real hard about Ole Miss right now."
Two of his teammates that he went with to the Cotton Bowl will also be freshmen at Ole Miss next Fall.
, you could say they want me to come join them too (laughing). It would be fun playing with those guys again. We talk about it alot."
What new did he learn about the Rebels during the trip?
"Their fans love their football players. You do not even have to be committed to them. They are just so nice. They asked me how my grades were coming along and seemed concerned about my well being. They treated their football players like movie stars or something. That is how our fans are at Madison Central. I want to go to a school where the fans love you, and I know at Ole Miss they show you a lot of love. People were coming up to me everywhere who I did not even know. They showed me a lot of love. I want to play for fans like that."
Who are the main schools involved right now?
"Right now Ole Miss is recruiting me the hardest. Coach Nutt was even over here by our school today. That was pretty cool. Vandy, Alabama, and FSU are sending me a lot of letters. MSU and USM have offered me too. Michigan and UCLA have been sending me some letters too. I will try to get around to as many places as I can this summer and see what everybody has to offer."
Tobias was one of two junior receivers named to the 1st Team All-State team for all classifications in the State of Mississippi. He was also named the 2009 Jackson Metro Player of the Year. One would think that he would be more than satisfied with how his junior season went, but he was not.
beat me in all of the stats (laughing). I think this season went OK for me. I had like 800 (890) and something receiving yards, but it could have been better. I had like 900 (940) my sophomore year so my stats were down this year. It is all good though. I am going to come back next year and become a better blocker and keep playing until the whistle blows.
