Last season, he rushed for 2,049 yards and 40 touchdowns. On defense, he intercepted three passes and had eight tackles for loss. The college interest has been coming in for him, but the two intial offers he received this week were still a surprise.
"I was definitely surprised," he admitted. "I had been getting a lot of mail and I knew they liked my video. I had no idea Coach Johnson was even coming into my school. To hear an offer was even more surprising and exciting."
Wright says Johnson explained to him and his coach what the Hawkeyes liked so much about him.
"I went into my coach's office and talking to me and telling me how they had already evaluated my film and liked what they saw and how he would be sending a written offer next week. He wanted me to come to Iowa and come down for a spring practice in the near future. We didn't have too long of a conversation, but it was nice to hear."
The junior day and campus visit invitations have also been coming fast. Wright says Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State have all invited him to campus and he may visit Purdue this weekend. He says those three, in addition to Iowa and Ball State, are showing the most interest right now.
"IU sent a cocach through, but haven't talked about an offer, Purdue is the same thing. Michigan State...Coach Treadwell said I have a good chance of getting an offer from them once they get a running backs coach. Their running backs coach (Dan Enos) went to coach at CMU."
Ball State, Wright's first offer, is a school he visited as a sophomore, has invited him to a spring practice and he says he is likely to head over to Muncie for that.
As for the Hawkeyes, Wright knows their style of play is a major plus.
"I like everything I've seen from Iowa. They went to the Orange Bowl and I know they like to run the ball in a tradional power offense. I know they always have good offensive linemen. They're definitely near the top of the list."
Wright was named 1st team All-State last season by the IFCA and AP. He reports a 520 squat, 330 bench and a 4.33 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
