Toledo Tour: Allen Gant
Allen Gant, Sylvania Southview, has been a household name in Ohio since helping his team win the state title as a freshman. What is hard to grasp is that Gant still has two high school seasons left to play. Gant's sophomore season was slowed by an injury, although he attempted to play through the pain, to help his team. Now back at 100%, he's anticipating his junior season. "My sophomore season went alright, but injuries really hurt my play," Gant said of his 2009 season. "I had a pulled hamstring in the first game, and I never felt healthy until the last game, but I stayed out there all year to help my team." "I'm encouraged for next season, and a lot of our guys are working hard in the weight room," he continued. "I'm currently at 6-foot-1, 203-pounds, and I think I'm in great shape following our basketball season. I'm still running a 4.59 in the forty, and I think I can get that time down over the summer." Gant is aware of his strengths and weaknesses on the football field, and is working hard to improve as a player. "I think I need to keep improving on being fundamentally sounder, and improving my techniques," he stated. "I want to get faster, and improve my lateral quickness. I think my strength is running excellent routes as a wide receiver, on offense. On defense, I'm able to run to the football, and make tackles when I get there." Although he currently holds no offers, Gant is well-known among college recruiters. His father, Tony Gant, played college football for Michigan, and is helping him with the recruiting process. "I have no offers, but a lot of schools have been in contact with my coach," he explained. "I'm hearing from Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Northwestern and Michigan. I was at Ohio State for the USC and Iowa games, and that atmosphere was great. I was up at Michigan for the Ohio State game. Before the USC game, I was able to meet with the Ohio State coaches, and (Ohio State assistant) "Doc" Tressel came to my basketball game a few weeks ago. Michigan called my dad a few weeks ago, and we'll see how that goes." "I hate to list any top schools at this time," he stated. "I'd rather just say I'm looking around, and keeping my options open. My dad is supposed to take me over to Penn State this summer. He's going over to play golf with (head coach) Joe Paterno, and they are good friends. Coach Paterno recruited my dad when he was in high school, and they became friends after my dad's career ended at Michigan, so that's pretty cool." We will be putting up film on Gant in the next few weeks, as his highlight tape is currently being worked on.
