Changes For Phillips
New Level Athletics had their 7 on 7 event at Michigan this weekend and one of the players that stood out was Calvin Phillips. A physically imposing 6'1, 212-lb running back, Phillips caught the ball and shook smaller defenders out of their shorts in the open field. His coach for the weekend, NLA's Kashann Simmons called him a "freak." Those who have seen Phillips play knew that already. He is considered one of the top prospects in the Midwest and was committed to Minnesota, but Phillips says that is no longer and there is really only one school he is looking at. "The University of Illinois. That's the school I'm looking forward to going to," he reported. He says the Illini have offered and he continues to stay in contact with them. "I talked to their coach, Coach Gilmore yesterday. They're the only coaches taht stay in contact with me. They've been calling me, asking me how I've been doing. That's why I like them. They call me and stay in contact more than any other school." Phillips will transfer from Momence to Kankakee this year, where he says he plans on running track and playing basketball in addition to being on the gridiron. Soon, he will be on spring break and that's when he plans to re-acquaint himself with Illinois in person. "I'll probably go there on spring break becausse I know my step brother stays down there and he goes to U of I, so I might be going down there for spring break." There have been some rumors that Phillips has interest in visiting and looking at other schools, but he says simply, there is one place on his mind. "Just U of I."
