McFarland Hooked by the Horns
The Texas Longhorns secured several commitments for their 2011 recruiting class during their junior day in February. One of those commitments came from El Paso (Texas) Eldorado High tight end M.J. McFarland. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound jumbo athlete chose the Longhorns over offers from UTEP and New Mexico. National signing day may be several months away, but McFarland appears to be very firm in his commitment. "I've always wanted to go to Texas. I went to their camp last summer and they liked me. I really like the coaching staff there. They are one of the top programs in the country. They have good academics and I feel like I can play for them," said McFarland. The El Paso standout plays wide receiver in high school, but is being recruited by the Longhorns to play tight end at the collegiate level. He possesses great size at 6-foot-5 and has all of the intangibles be an impact player at the next level. "I'm good at using my height to my advantage. I'm good at jump balls and know how to get open. I have pretty good hands and can run routes pretty well." McFarland plans on attending the longhorns summer football camp this June. In addition he plans on graduating high school a semester early and will be an early enrollee. McFarland finished his junior season with 985 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.
