Brett Smith, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback prospect from West Salem High School in Salem, Ore., informed Scout.com Wednesday that he had received his first scholarship offer. It came from a school he had only started hearing from, but was thrilled when the call finally came through. It probably didn't hurt that Smith just came off an MVP performance at Sunday's Nike camp in Eugene.

"I got my first offer, from Wyoming," Smith told Scout.com. "It was about 10 minutes ago. I talked to coach (Pete) Kaligis. He played at Washington. He was going to get together with the coaches and he said they had planned on offering me some time in the future. He called my coach (Shawn Stanley) and they talked. Then he used his one phone call to me and offered me on the spot. He said, 'I just talked to your coach and we want to offer you right now'.

"It kind of took me by surprise, I couldn't believe it. I was happy with it. He said they were really, really impressed with the story how I broke my arm and how I played with it. He said those are the kind of guys we want, and we're excited about you and we want you to be here. They are going to send the written offer in the mail next week."

Smith admitted to being a fan of the Cowboys and their spread attack from afar. "I watched their bowl game last year and they are a really fun team to watch," he said. "Our offense is similar to their offense, the way they spread it around. I'm excited about getting to know more about them.

"The first offer means a lot, and I told them I'm going to do whatever I can to try and get to camp in June. The first offer, whoever puts their full trust in me and put that out there, that means a lot to me. I want to show that much interest as well and get to know them. And I'm glad it's Wyoming, because I've been a fan of their program. I didn't expect it because I hadn't heard from them until recently, but it means a lot. I love that offense and I love that school."

Smith still reiterated his desire to make a commitment to a school before his senior season starts, and the Wyoming offer just might be the first of many that come during the May evaluation period. Idaho and Washington State came by West Salem Tuesday, and Boise State and California came by last week.

"I'd like to think things are picking up," he said, and it sure sounds like the top quarterback prospect in the Northwest will soon have a choice of programs to look at by the end of the month.
