San Diego State Hitting AZ Hard for Recruits

Reggie Gilbert

News from Tyler Johnstone (OT Chandler Hamilton), Reggie Gilbert (DE Laveen Fairfax), Gary Ross (WR Peoria Centennial), Gary Chambers (WR Glendale Ironwood) and Vi Teofilo (OG Phoenix Moon Valley).

San Diego State is making Arizona a recruiting priority. The Aztecs have already offered five players from the 2010 class and Scout.com has confirmed that five more received offers today.

Chandler (Az.) Hamilton offensive tackle Tyler Johnstone says, "I just got off the phone with Coach White and he offered. He said that Coach Funk watched a game film and didn't even have my highlight and he told Coach White that he would be stupid not to call me and tell me they want me."

Johnstone (6-6 250) has also been offered by Colorado. He was named honorable mention all-region in 2009 for the 5A1 state champion Huskies.

Offensive linemen that are big, physical and can run are hard to find and offensive guard Vi Teofilo from Phoenix Moon Valley is one of those players. The 6-3 265 pounder was also offered by SDSU today, the first offer for him. Fresno State and Boise State have also shown interest in Teofilo.

Teofilo says this about the offer, "San Diego State called and said they were offering. They said they like my speed and aggression. I'm kind of still in shock."

Vi was named 1st team all-region last year for the Rockets. See him in action here -

The explosive WR/Returner Gary Ross from Peoria Centennial also received his first offer when the Aztecs came calling today.

"I got home and my Grandma told me that San Diego State called and they were offering me a full scholarship. I am so happy, I never dreamed this could happen."

Ross (5-11 170) was an all-region return man as a junior recording 502 punt return yards and taking several to the house. He also had 268 receiving yards, 23 tackles and 2 interceptions. Arizona State and Oregon State have also expressed interest.

Gary Chambers, a big receiver from Glendale Ironwood also received his first D1 offer when SDSU offered today.

Chambers (6-2 190) was named 1st team all-region as a junior after catching 39 balls for 503 yards and 7 TDs.

It looks like Laveen Fairfax DE Reggie Gilbert will be the school's first D1 football player. He too received his first offer from SDSU.

Fairfax is just a few years old and played their first varsity season last year. A season in which Gilbert (6-3 230) was named 1st team all-region after recording 78 tackles and 13 sacks. "I finally got one," he says about his first offer. "Coach White told me that his DC likes me a lot and that I will fit perfectly in his defense."
