South Showcase: Darrin Reaves' big day

Darrin Reaves, running back from Clay-Chalkville, Ala., turned in a very impressive performance at the South Showcase Combine this past weekend at Gadsden City High School. Several schools are expressing interest, but his combine skills are more than enough for college coaches to take a closer look. He also has a favorite school.

"The camp was really good," said Darrin Reaves. "It was a real good experience. I had fun out there. I loved the one-on-ones. It was very competitive.

"I felt like I did really good. They measured me at 5-foot-9, 187-pounds. I ran a 4.32 in the 40 [yard dash]. That was the fastest 40-time of the day. I had never run that fast before. I had been injured some of the other times I had run it."

Reaves also produced a 35" vertical, 10'2" broad jump and a time of 7.53 L-cone.

A little more than a handful of schools have given Reaves some attention, but this South Showcase Combine may lead to more serious looks and eventual scholarship offers.

"Auburn has been showing interest in me," he said. "I went to one of their games last year and attended Junior Day. I get a lot of mail from Stanford, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and Illinois.

"We just started practice on Monday. We are getting acclimated to the weather. It's going pretty good so far. Southern Miss came by on Tuesday. Boston College, I think, came by. The day they came by I was off campus.

"Right now I am trying to work on my break away speed. I found myself a few times getting caught from behind because I was coming off an injury. I want to stay healthy. I think if I can stay healthy I will have a real good year."

Reaves has plans to hit several SEC camps.

"I am going to Auburn, LSU, and I may go to the Alabama camp," he said. "I am also going to the Nike football training football at Alabama. I want to show these coaches I can play and help these teams out with their goals they are trying to achieve."

One school stands out above the rest. Growing up a fan of one in-state school has stuck with him.

"Auburn is my favorite school right now," said Reaves. "They have always been my favorite school. When I was little that's when Auburn used to beat Alabama, and I wanted to go there.

"I went to their Junior Day. I loved it and had a great time. I liked everything I saw. I liked their work-out plan and how they do things. I like the environment and everything there."
