Scouting The Defensive Backs
#1 CB - DeAnthony Thomas Los Angeles (CA) Crenshaw | SIZE: 5-10/175 EVALUATED: In Person Practice, In-Person Game, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Electric. That's the best way to describe Thomas. Unless you want to use versatile. Thomas could be an elite prospect at four positions: running back, receiver, safety and cornerback. But with his size, corner is probably where he'll spend his career. Not to say he won't get a chance to catch the ball out of the backfield, or get a couple of carries, or return punts or kicks. Thomas can do it all. As a corner, he's got tremendous backpedal quickness, quick recovery skills, and smooth, fluid hip movement. And despite a smallish frame, Thomas isn't afraid to lay a pop. Watching him last fall, you'd see him come in on safety blitzes and light up the quarterback. He's great against the run and even better in coverage. - Brandon Huffman CEILING: Elite | FLOOR: Elite RECRUITING: Committed to USC. #1 S - Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips | SIZE: 6-2/190 EVALUATED: In Person Camp, In-Person 7on7, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Clinton-Dix can do it all at safety and he could probably be a big cornerback on the next level as well. He really explodes out of his breaks and closes on the ball extremely well. He is physical, he has instincts, and he has great size as well. As good as he is in coverage, he is just as good in run support. He can still improve his drops and his overall footwork, but he is elite, and he should be very successful on the next level. - Chad Simmons CEILING: Elite | FLOOR: Elite RECRUITING: Committed to Alabama. #2 CB - Doran Grant Akron (OH) St. Vincent-St. Mary | SIZE: 5-9/165 EVALUATED: In-Person Camp, In-Person Game, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: He is one of the best pure athletes in the country. He's explosive, has a great vertical, good speed, and change of direction. The concern with him is his height, but that leaping ability combined with his ball skills do make up greatly for that. Taller receivers may still give him trouble, but he has the hips to turn and stay with almost any receiver. After the interception, he is a dangerous threat. In run support, he shows some aggressiveness and effectiveness, but must get bigger and stronger. He doesn't necessarily have a lot of pop in his tackling, but he does have good for and attacks low. His blocking on special teams and the way he comes up in run support shows a willingness to embrace contact. - Allen Trieu CEILING: Elite | FLOOR: High RECRUITING: Holds offers from Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Illinois, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, USC, and West Virginia. #3 CB - Leroy Scott South Houston (TX) | SIZE: 5-10/185 EVALUATED: Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Leroy Scott has been a man-child ever since he first set foot on a high school football field. He has great coverage abilities and has the strength to overpower receivers on the line and the speed to recover if he is not able to slow them up on the jam. He takes very good angles when making a tackle and is not afraid to get inside the box and light up a ball carrier. Scott does an outstanding job at sticking with the receiver and making plays. - Greg Powers CEILING: Excellent | FLOOR: Excellent RECRUITING: Committed to Texas. #4 CB - Josh Turner Oklahoma City (OK) Millwood | SIZE: 5-11/170 EVALUATED: In Person Practice, In-Person Game, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Turner stands out at wide receiver and corner in high school but plans to make the move to defense in college. He is a corner who has excellent coverage skills and he will be able to come up and support the run. He has great hips and flexibility and is very smooth. He will need to get stronger for press coverages and he has the type of frame that will fill out nicely. He will only become better as he develops his game in college. - Greg Powers CEILING: Excellent | FLOOR: Excellent RECRUITING: Currently lists Miami, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Alabama as his favorites. #2 S - Sheroid Evans Sugar Land (TX) Dulles | SIZE: 6-0/175 EVALUATED: In Person Practice, In-Person Game, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Evans has excellent cover skills and good hips for a bigger defensive back, so he could realistically play corner or safety on the next level. He tackles well but his length is another strength factoring in to his safety projection. He is one of the top track stars in America and has posted an indoor time of 21.3 in the 200-meter. At this time Evans is more of a track star playing football but the potential to become a dominant force is there. - Greg Powers CEILING: Elite | FLOOR: Very High RECRUITING: Committed to Texas. #3 S - Erique Florence Valley (AL) | SIZE: 6-2/185 EVALUATED: In Person Practice, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Florence is a big-time hitter and that is what first jumps out about him as a player. He not only hits, but he hits with good form. He closes on the ball well, he shows good instincts in the secondary, and he makes plays on the ball. He can still work on his bursts out of his breaks when in coverage, his speed when changing direction, and adding more strength, but he has a very bright future strong safety. - Chad Simmons CEILING: Very High | FLOOR: High RECRUITING: Currently leaning towards Auburn and Alabama over other offers. #4 S - Darion Arrington Wiggins (MS) Stone | SIZE: 6-2/200 EVALUATED: In Person Practice, In-Person Game, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Arrington is a natural at the safety position. He is very physical and very athletic. Unlike a lot of players with his size, he is very fluid in his movements. He is a very humble player who does his talking on the field. He rarely sits out a snap and he has the respect of his teammates. Darion is a quiet leader who will play any position he is asked to play in order to help his team. He is a tremendous hitter and he makes the smart play. - Chad Simmons CEILING: Very High | FLOOR: High RECRUITING: Currently lists favorites as Alabama, Memphis, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Texas Tech. #5 S - Albert Louis-Jean Brockton (MA) | SIZE: 6-1/170 EVALUATED: In Person Camp, In-Person Combine, Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Louis-Jean has demonstrated outstanding ability in coverage as a cornerback, but at the next level we see him best suited to play safety. Louis-Jean is a fierce hitter who will knock the daylights out of an opposition. He doesn't appear to have the true top end elite speed that most look for in a pure cover corner, although he has been timed in the (4.5) range. Louis-Jean has a great frame which should allow him to get much bigger and stronger. He is headed to Miami and he should flourish with Randy Shannon and envoke memories of some of the elite safeties the Hurricanes have had. - Bob Lichtenfels CEILING: Elite | FLOOR: High RECRUITING: Committed to Miami. #5 CB - Quandre Diggs Angleton (TX) | SIZE: 5-9/190 EVALUATED: Game Film, Highlights SCOUTING REPORT: Plays quarterback but projects at cornerback or receiver on the next level. Has amazing speed and can get up to his top speed almost immediately. Fantastic athlete who is deadly on kick returns also. Has great bloodlines as his brother is in the NFL. He is a playmaker. Works well over top and comes under to make the quick knockdown with the ability to change gears quickly and close ground. - Greg Powers CEILING: Very High | FLOOR: Excellent RECRUITING: Committed to Texas.
