Southfield Christian (Mich.) defensive tackle Shafer Johnson shows quickness and disruptive…
Johnson May Head to Big Ten
Shafer Johnson is an athletic, disruptive 6'0, 300-lb defensive tackle from Southfield Christian just starting to really pop onto the radar. Turns out, one Big Ten team already knew all about him, and extended an offer his way just last week. "I was offered by Indiana," Johnson explained. "I got it in the mail. They visited my school a couple times and apparently, they were interested. That is my very first very first offer." The first offer is always special, but to have it come from a Big Ten team made it even better for Johnson. "I was surprised and happy. I was jumping around like crazy. I didn't believe it was happening. They seem very excited about me. They think I have some potential. I'm very excited to have that much interest from them that seems pretty genuine." Johnson says Arkansas State and Bowling Green are also very interested along with Michigan State, Illinois, and Syracuse. However, if all goes well on his visit to Indiana this Thursday, it is entirely likely that he'll be a Hoosier. "I actually think I'm going to commit to Indiana," he admitted, "probably this Thursday. It all depends on the vibe I get. If I don't, I'll attend the Michigan State camp, Illinois, and Syracuse I believe." Johnson says he is looking at a few different factors on his visit before making a decision, not the least of which, are the types of people he would spend four years with. "Well, I'm going to first see if there's good diversity there. I want to see if there are a lot of ethnic groups there rather than just one. I'll look at the facilities to see if they're newer or older, and just see where everyone's heads at, figure out their defensive scheme and see how everything works there." Shafer was an All-Oakland County selection as a junior, and carries a 3.3 grade point average in the classroom. He reports bench pressing 225-lbs 23 times.
