Richards Making His Own Name
Palmdale (Calif.) was known last year for their defensive standout Joshua Shaw, the all-American who was the West's top defensive back, that eventually signed with Florida. This year, it's the other side of the ball where Palmdale has a standout, in receiver David Richards. The 6-3, 195-pound Richards has five offers, and plenty more schools are keeping tabs on him. "Oregon State, Arizona, Colorado State, San Diego State and New Mexico State have offered," said Richards. "I'm also hearing a lot from Arizona State, Fresno State, San Jose State ,Washington and UCLA." Iowa State is another school interested in Richards, having come by the Palmdale campus after signing a pair of players from their in 2009. "They came by the school during spring practice and they've been talking to me a little bit," said Richards. Richards has been making an effort to get in front of the UCLA coaches, attending their 1-Day Skills Camp earlier this month and now he plans to be back in Westwood this week for their skills camp. Arizona State is in the same boat, having had Richards at their camp last weekend. "Both of them said they want to see me work a little more before they decide if they'll offer," said Richards. Richards said that Oregon State and Arizona lead for him, but Washington, UCLA and Arizona State are also in the mix for him. "I probably will end up playing in the Pac-10," said Richards. Florida got Shaw and did visit Palmdale this spring to see him and teammate Steve Dillon, a defensive end. "Coach (Brian) White came out for me and Steve and they still talk to us," said Richards. Richards said that he and Dillon have talked about ending up at the same school. "We're going to do what's best for us, but playing together could be a possibility," said Richards. Richards won't rush his decision. "I definitely want to take all my visits, then after that, make my decision," said Richards. Academically, Richards has a 2.8 and took the SAT earlier this month. Richards caught 36 passes for 789 yards and 10 touchdowns and had 29 tackles and an interception in 2009.
