French Looking for Right Bond
Christian French, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound, three-star tight end from John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, says he has 10 total scholarship offers – Texas A&M, Louisville, Iowa, Iowa State, Notre Dame, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Wisconsin and Nebraska. French, ranked as the No. 20 tight end in the country by Scout.com, still denies a leader and says he hasn't narrowed down his favorites yet. "Everybody is on the same plane right now," French said. "I don't really have a timeframe, but I'd say hopefully I'll do it by the end of the season," he said. "I'll have a top five probably by the start of school." French did not get the chance to visit anyone during the spring and does not have any summer camps planned. "I do plan on taking some visits this summer," he said. "That'll help me with my choices. I'll see how comfortable I am there and that's how I'll start narrowing it down. "I want to find a place that I can see myself being at for four to five years," he said. "I want to make sure I can build a good bond with the coaches and the players." The schools that French has already visited are Iowa, Iowa State, Notre Dame and Missouri. "I see both Iowa and Iowa State as great opportunities," he said about the two in-state programs. "Iowa could win the national championship in the next few years," he said. "I don't see them slipping. They are always successful." The Cyclones, however, have not had the Hawkeyes' recent success. "Iowa State is rebuilding," he said. "I really like the coaches there and how they never try to feed you anything false. That's a program that is starting to do something." Another school that French has high hopes for is Notre Dame. "From seeing the impact that coach Brian Kelly has already had there I think they'll have a great season," he said. "It's a completely turnaround. It seems like everything is different there. Everyone is so motivated and excited. I'm hoping they do well." French's most recent offer came from Texas A&M. "They offered about a month ago," he said. "The coaches there seem great too. I like the tradition the school has and they told me they need me at tight end. They think I'd be able to make an impact there." Missouri is another program whose offense appeals to French. "I like the style they play," he said. "I like how they use the tight end and they always seem to produce good tight ends. "I've talked to some of the players there too and they all really like it," he said. "Nobody has anything bad to say." Most of French's offers are from Big 12 and Big Ten schools. Then there's Nebraska, current-Big-12-future-Big-10-program. "I think them going to the Big Ten is gonna be good for them," he said. "I can't see it being a bad thing. It'll be a change." French plans to major in business administration and reports a 3.2 core GPA. He took the ACT on June 12 and is waiting on his results.
