Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista offensive lineman Jacob Welter chooses to play for Mid-American…
Welter Remains on Hold
Jacob Welter, the 6-foot-5, 291-pound three-star offensive lineman from Monte Vista High School in Danville, Calif., still only has one scholarship offer. "Ohio is my only offer," Welter said. "But I've gone to a couple camps already and hopefully some others will offer." Welter, ranked as the No. 46 offensive guard in the country by Scout.com, has attended camps at Arizona State, Kansas, Oregon and Washington. He now favors Oregon solidly over California, Kansas, Arizona State and Ohio. "I'd consider committing to Oregon if they offered," he said. "That place is amazing. It's unlike any place I've seen. Eugene is a great town and that's the kind of program that I'd like to play for." Welter says the Ducks are recruiting him the hardest. "They keep on contact the most," he said. "They email, write letters, call…they seem to like me." He says he's being recruited by Ducks offensive line coach Steve Greatwood and defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti. "They're real good guys," he said. During the spring, Welter attended the California spring game. "It's close to home and I like that they are redoing their facilities," he said about the Bears. "It's also a good academic school." He is being recruited by Bears offensive line coach Steve Marshall. "He told me they want to see my first three games this season," he said. Welter grew up following Nebraska because his dad, Tom Welter, played offensive tackle for the Huskers in the 1980's. In fact, his dad played alongside Turner Gill, who is now the head coach at Kansas. "I think that program (Kansas) is on its way to being a top team," he said about the Jayhawks. "My dad knows coach Gill and we have a good relationship with him." Another school that Welter has gotten to know well is Arizona State. "I've been there a few times already," he said. "I like it there. Arizona just seems like a good place to live. "I really like the locker rooms and facilities there," he said about the Sun Devils. Welter plans to major in psychology and reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 1670 SAT.
