Midwest Rankings Update

Midwest Regional Manager

After the completion of summer camps, Scout.com has updated some of their rankings, and a few players from the Midwest made significant moves.

Coyne Joins Scout300
Patrick Coyne has long been a guy we have considered on the cusp of the Scout300, and while the Cincinnati commit did not do a ton of camps this summer, he really impressed the Scout contingent at the Elite 11 tryout at Ohio State. He'll have another chance to impress at the Gridiron Kings event coming up, but we feel he has done enough to make this jump. He has one of the strongest arms in the country, and has gotten more and more accurate each time we have seen him. He is now the nation's #19 quarterback.

Spartan Commits Make Moves
Three Michigan State commits moved into 3-star range. Mark Scarpinato, Joel Heath, and Trae Waynes. Heath almost made it to four. We have seen him twice this off-season, and he has blown us away with his athleticism. He's long and explosive. He showed that he was still raw in 1-1s, but his upside is excellent. He could continue to move up with a good junior season. Scrapinato may not be a 300-lb super athlete, but he's tough as nails, has an excellent motor and has good strength. He's the type of high effort guy that any program could find a place for. Waynes has great, great speed. Watching him on tape, I didn't see a ton of physicality, which is why we had him rated lower as a safety. He showed at camp that he could play cornerback, where his slight frame is of less concern. His man to man cover skills were impressive this summer.

Illinois Prospects Move Upward
The state of Illinois is strong again, and we had a couple players from the state move into 3-star territory:

  • Scott McDowell - OT - Hinsdale Centaral: He dominated this summer wherever we saw him. He is strong, and has excellent fundamentals. He moved to #33 OT.

  • Matt LaCosse - TE - Naperville North: We weren't sure where to list him. He's a high school quarterback and I think he can play there in college, but he showed he's a BCS level tight end this summer.

  • Reilly O'Toole - QB - Wheaton Warrenville South: O'Toole is a gamer, so throwing in shorts is not necessarily where he'll impress. Still, he spins the ball well and is accurate. Throw in all the intangibles he has and his in-game smarts and decision making, and he's a guy you can win a lot of games with.

  • Luke Luhrsen - OG - Wheaton Warrenville South: We finally got some tape on him, and he really proved to be a mauler in the run game. He has good feet, is tough, strong, and dominates the guy across from him. He needs work in pass pro, but he deserved the third star.

  • Matt Frazier - OG - Kankakee Bishop McNamara: He did 31 reps of 225-lbs at MSU, a number NFL prospects at the combine don't even meet. Then he had great success in 1-1s. This Northwestern commit is rugged, obviously strong, and should be a great get for the Wildcats.

  • Joshua Ferguson - RB - Joliet Catholic Academy: Speed is the name of the game for him. He regularly runs in the low 4.4s, and shows that on tape. He has gotten bigger, and maintained that speed, and showed us he can catch the ball. All that added up to his move up.

Other Three-Star Moves
A few other prospects who impressed us enough to move to three.

  • Kenny Knight - WR - Detroit Country Day (MI): Smooth, tall, and had a few good camps.

  • Tom Olson - OG - Mahtomedi (MN): Minnesota commit has good overall fundamentals and showed good athleticism on tape.

  • Sam Arneson - TE - Merrill (WI): 6'4 Wisconsin commit showed he could run and be a receiving threat on film.

  • Justin Olack - WR - Massillon Washington (OH): Impressed us last season already, and this Pittsburgh commit showed even more playmaking skills on his video.

  • Tamani Carter - CB - Pickerington Central (OH): Cover man has good hips and turned a lot of college heads this summer.

  • Geoff Mogus - OG - Lakewood St. Edward (OH): Northwestern commit was dominant at every camp this summer.

  • Kyle Rose - DE - Centerville (OH): Great frame, and has the demeanor and explosiveness to go with it. West Virginia got a good one here.
