Scouting GK: West Defense

Stefan McClure

Gridiron Kings is a national 7on7 tournament that brought 64 of the nation's top skill position players to Orlando this past weekend. Scout was there for all the action and so lets take a closer look at the West defense.

The Players:
LB's: Aaron Wallace, Rahim Cassell, and Corey Waller
DB's: Stefan McClure, George Atkinson, Josh Atkinson, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, and Marcus Peters

Top Performer:
McClure. Playing both corner and safety, McClure was the most active of all the West defenders and was also the most successful at shutting down opposing receivers. He even dropped a few more picks. He was named to the All-Tournament Team afterwards and it didn't surprise anyone.

Top Prospect:
McClure. At 5-foot-11, he runs really well, has some ball skills, and seems to have a real good understanding of how to play the position and the game. He's a physical kid at times and doesn't mind really mixing it up with opposing receivers. He looked like the best prospect on the West defense so it didn't surprise me when I looked to see he was the highest rated one on Scout.

Other Notes:
The linebackers were OK in coverage, unless they were being asked to cover Florida tight end Nick O'Leary. Josh Atkinson banged up his knee and was limited. George Atkinson plays RB and WR in high school and has a safety's body but was playing corner. He's OK there but it's doubtful that's his best position. Peters had some moments where he looked good in coverage and looked lost at other times. Ekpre-Olomu had a solid, yet unspectacular performance.
