Flavin Talks About Trips
Patrick Flavin, the 6-foot-7, 260-pound three-star offensive tackle from Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill., recently got back from an unofficial visit to Boston College last weekend, while taking a trip out west to visit the California Golden Bears earlier this month. After visits to opposite sides of the country, Flavin is still trying to pin down his top five schools. "Right now I like Cal, Boston College, Notre Dame (no offer), Illinois, Oregon, UCLA and Purdue," he said. "I'm still in the early stages of the recruitment process and really want to try and get one or two more visits in, whether they're unofficial or not, to really see where I'm at in this process and what fits best. I really don't have a leader out of these schools because they all offer something different like location and coaching staffs. "I had a great time out at Cal," he said. "And it was cool to see the differences between both Cal and Boston College and just be on different sides of the country. I enjoyed being close to San Francisco out at Cal and the setting there is great. Coaches (Steve) Marshall (offensive line) and (Jeff) Genyk (special teams coord/tight ends) were really great to talk to and I enjoyed the visit out west. "I also really like the coaches at Boston College and had a great time on my visit," he said. "I've got a great relationship going with coach (Sean) Devine (offensive line) and coach (Dave) Brock (tight ends) and the school has a really cool atmosphere with how close it is to the city. It would be a great place to go to school and I really like the balance between the campus feel and how accessible the city of Boston is." Flavin has his local area schools on the radar as well. "Both Purdue and Illinois would be plusses for me too because they're close to home and in the Big Ten," he said. "And I'm still waiting on Notre Dame (camp in June). We're talking and I'll re-evaluate them and look at them closer if they offer." There's one more Pac-10 school Flavin feels he needs to see in order to help with his decision. "I've heard a lot about Oregon and have been talking with coach (Steve) Greatwood (offensive line) and coach (Chip) Kelly and it's definitely a school that I have to check out. I hear the game day's there are just crazy." Official visits are still up in the air for Flavin. "I'm trying to see what dates will work and what the schools are going to be," he said. "I don't know how it would go during the season to get out to either Oregon, Cal or Boston College because they're so far away, but a place like Illinois would be a little more flexible for me. Overall, I plan on setting some up soon. "As far as a timetable is concerned, I was hoping to make my decision before the start of the season, but really found that I'd be putting too much pressure on myself, so I don't have a timetable," he said "When I feel good about one school, that's when I'll commit." Benet Academy plays Oswego East on Aug. 27 in its first game of the season. Flavin reports a 3.0 GPA and a 25 on the ACT. "I don't know yet if I'm going to retake the test again."
