Nobody expected Mike Newsome's Butler Bulldogs to have this many major college prospects, but the commitments keep coming. This time, rising star wide receiver Jarrett Boykin is the latest as he verballed to Virginia Tech.

"He committed to Virginia Tech last night," said Coach Newsome. "He didn't want to miss out on an opportunity, and they were actively recruiting several wide receivers in this class. From the offers he had, he felt Virginia Tech was the right place."

The commitment comes with a major rematch coming against rival Independence this Friday in the second round of the North Carolina state playoffs.

In the previous matchup, Boykin was instrumental in helping Butler to the first in-state victory over Independence in 106 games.

That type of performance helped attract the attention and offers from schools like Virginia Tech and Illinois, which already hold commitments from teammates E.J. Whitley and Jacob Charest, respectively.

While a visit to Illinois was scheduled for this weekend, that is now cancelled after a trip to Blacksburg.

"He went up there this past weekend with his dad and his uncle, who played at Tennessee, and they really liked what they saw."

Boykin, a three-star prospect after his performance in that game against Independence and throughout the season, was not really looked at hard after his junior year.

"He split time with Mickey Brewer when we decided we needed him all the time on the field and we started to use him as an h-back and put him in motion to get open.

"I think he was overlooked because we had so many people going division one that they did not think we could have more players."

It looks like Frank Beamer found a pretty good one.
