West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley defensive tackle Alex Willcox is verbally committed to Iowa. Valley head coach Gary Swenson gives the Hawkeye fans a preview of what they can expect from Willcox in the future.

The West Des Moines (Valley) torch is about to be passed. At least from the defensive tackle position.

Jared Clauss, a junior defensive tackle for the Hawks and head coach Kirk Ferentz will welcome 6-foot-2, 265-pound, Valley defensive lineman Alex Willcox to the Iowa family next fall.

“Alex is cut in the same mold and Jared,” said Valley head coach Gary Swenson.

“Alex loves to play the game. He’s a very good student and he’s a good character kid. He was 1st team all-conference last year and he should be all-state this year.

“I don’t know if Alex will contribute right away but in two years he’s going to be a solid performer for Iowa.”

We asked coach Swenson if there were other schools looking at Willcox.

Iowa State, Kansas and Northern Iowa were the main ones but to tell you the truth. As soon as Iowa offered, it was over. Alex wanted to play football at Iowa.

“Iowa has had good luck with our kids. That’s why I think coach Ferentz offered early.”

Alex Willcox and his Valley teammates play an important game this weekend. They have to beat Ft. Dodge to make the state play-offs.

Best of luck to coach Swenson, Alex Willcox and the rest of the Valley community.
