One of the top recruits in the state of Tennessee, Marlon Walls, transferred
from Wooddale to Olive Branch before the start of his senior campaign. Now another
top flight prospect has done the same.
"Aubrey Phillips has officially
transferred over here. He is in school at Olive Branch now," added Olive Branch head coach, Scott Samsel. "I
think he got tired of driving back and forth from Olive Branch to Memphis every
day. His mother got a job in Olive Branch a few months ago, and he wanted to stay
close to his mother."
The last two years, the Olive Branch team has
benefited greatly from the City of Memphis as their starting QB in the 2006 season,
Cannon Smith, transferred from Christian Brothers after having his high school
eligibility run out. The state of Mississippi gave Cannon another year to complete
his high school eligibility due to a sickness he developed which made him miss
a year of school. Cannon parlayed that into being a huge success for the Conquistador's
offense as he holds the school record for yards passing in a season for Olive
Branch and was selected to participate in the Army All-American game. Cannon enrolled
at Hargrave and inked with Miami in December and finished Spring ball running
3rd on the Hurricanes depth chart.
Last season DE Marlon Walls left Wooddale
because his mother took a job in the city of Olive Branch. Marlon also had a huge
impact on the Conquistador's team as he helped them to the North Half Finals and
was named the Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year. Walls inked with Tennessee
in February.
So what about Coach Samsel's newest transfer?
"He
is a good one. Aubrey is 6' 6", 330 and is an outstanding player and student.
He had a 3.8 GPA and scored an 18 on the ACT. Duke, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Penn State, and Tennessee have all offered him. Those are the ones I know for sure.
There have been a lot of folks who have come through here that have said yes (he
had an offer), but I will officially release those schools when I get it in black
and white (in writing)."
Olive Branch could have one of the best one/two
punch in the state with OT Aubrey Phillips and OG DeMarcus Harris. Can the Conquistadors
finally overtake the premier program in the state this year, South Panola?
Stay
tuned, as the first battle of the titans will come in the regular season and the
second usually comes on the last Saturday in November (North Half Finals).
