Lafayette County standout, Montez Phillips, made it official just a few minutes ago.

"I committed to MSU around 30 minutes ago," added Montez Phillips. "I was thinking about it for a minute, and I wanted to get it over with, and it seemed like they wanted me more. I also wanted to get away from Oxford so I went ahead and committed to MSU."

What was MSU's reaction?

"Coach Croom asked me if I was ready to play WR, and I said yes, and he said that is what he wanted to hear. He told me he was excited about me coming."

Early playing time also played a role.

"Ole Miss wanted me at QB, but I knew about Jevan Snead so it would be a while before I hit the field. I think I can get a starting job next year at MSU."

Montez started at receiver and cornerback as a sophomore and collected 5 interceptions and 7 catches for 119 yards. His junior season, he moved over to quarterback and rushed for 858 yards and passed for 958 and 16 total TD's.
