One of Florida's top defensive linemen has not attended any camps this summer but that has not stopped the college recruiters from taking notice.
"I think I am going to the LSU and Auburn camps later this month,
but I am not sure yet," added Corey Gaines "I have been offered so far
by Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and South Florida. Central
Florida, Tennessee, and Rutgers are my latest scholarship offers. They offered
me this summer."
What has Corey interested in LSU?
"They
are a major D1 school, and they have a good education program and put guys in
the league."
And Auburn?
"I just love their defense, and
they have a good business program. I talk to a few of their coaches on the phone
on a regular basis. They are recruiting me pretty hard."
Who else
is standing out for the 6' 0", 275 pound defensive tackle?
"Tennessee.
I have a good relationship with Coach Chevis. Me and him talk quite often."
Who
are some other coaches that Corey talks to on a consistent basis?
"Coach
Bolt at Iowa State and Coach Vaughn from Ole Miss. I do not know much about either
school, really, but Coach Vaughn graduated from my high school so we have that
in common. He talks about how beautiful it is down there and how good of an atmosphere
it is. And Coach Bolt is really cool. He is a lot of fun to talk to, and I think
they are on the rebound at Iowa State."
What will be the main factors
when it does come decision time?
"Education and how far away it is
because I want my family to see me play."
Distance will be the main
role?
"No sir, I believe that it has more to do with how well I fit
in to their program more than anything. If I fit in better at a school like Tennessee
or an Ole Miss better than I do with a Florida school, that is where I am going."
Corey
played both ways for Amos P. Godby (FL) last year.
"The first part
of the season, I played OL and when it cooled down, I went both ways so I did
not wear down. I had 10 tackles and 2 sacks in the playoffs. I made 1st Team All-State
in Class 3A and 1st Team All-Big Ben. I graded out at 88% and had 48 pancakes
for the season."
Gaines reports a 2.8 GPA / 17 ACT.
