Paterson Catholic High School has always been a haven for talented prospects and this year is no different as they have six players that could end up playing at the Division I level. Tristan Pommells is one of those players, however the middle linebacker will need to make a position switch to safety or cornerback to do so.

Tristan Pommells, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back from Paterson Catholic High School in Paterson, N.J., registered 45 tackles, forced three fumbles and returned a fumble recovery 75 yards for a touchdown as a junior while playing linebacker, however because of his size he’ll have to move to the secondary in college.

“Right now I’m getting the heaviest attention from Wagner, Monmouth, Morgan State, Syracuse and Rutgers,” Pommells said. “Syracuse and Rutgers both invited me to their schools for camp, but I couldn’t get there. Schools are telling me that I’ll most likely end up at corner or safety right now as I run in the 4.55 range.”

“My brother actually had an offer from Syracuse before committing to Connecticut and had good things to say about the Huskies,” Pommells explained. “I was up there once and the campus was pretty big. The program has had it a bit rough lately, but I really enjoy watching their defense play. I’ve also heard great things about the coaching staff.”

“Rutgers really started off with nothing, but since Coach (Greg) Schiano has come in they’ve really built it up big there,” Pommells stated. “They’re a great program right now and I’d love to be a part of that defense. The campus is really nice and I saw they were adding to the stadium when I visited. It’s also very close to home which I like.”

Pommells was a second-team All-League selection in 2007.
