Darius Winston is a soft spoken defender from Arkansas that does his biggest talking with his play. Winston is rated 5-Stars by Scout.com and is one of the most heavily pursued prospects in the country.
After making an early commitment to the University of Arkansas, Darius Winston
was somewhat overwhelmed by the recruiting process as offers began to pour in
from all over the country. Rather than being listed as a "soft
commitment", arguably the most ridiculous term in college sports, Winston
did the honorable thing and told the Arkansas coaches that he'd prefer not to be
listed as a commitment so he could explore his options and make an informed
decision.
"I grew up loving Arkansas," said Winston. "I always said that if
they'd offer me, I'd commit to them."
An onslaught of college recruiters followed, and Winston backed off of his
original commitment.
"I just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision."
When asked what he would be looking for as he compared schools to the team he
originally committed to, Winston answered "I want to go to a school where I
reach my full potential, and I'm looking for great coaching."
Who are some of the teams that Winston is considering?
"I'm still looking at Arkansas, and I'm also looking at trying to take
visits to schools like Clemson, Michigan, Tennessee, and Florida State. I really
don't have a top school right now."
Winston's summer practice could be put on hold as he'll have surgery tomorrow.
"I dislocated my pinky catching a ball, and I might miss some of summer
practice."
Winston's Central team reached the second round of the playoffs last year, and
he is looking forward to making an even bigger contribution as a senior.
"I caught one pass last year for 50 yards and a touchdown. I was supposed
to see more action on offense this year, but the injury might cut into my reps
this summer."
When asked if he played any safety last year, Winston was crystal clear on where
his hear lies. "I've been a cornerback my whole life."
Winston has accepted an invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and the
lone person he has met that will play in the game with him, will help him form
one fearsome defensive backfield.
"I've met Gabe Lynn (Scout.com's No. 2 ranked corner nationally). We text
eachother a lot. We've talked a little about teaming up in the game."
Having made an early decision that he wasn't comfortable with initially, don't
expect Winston to make another hasty decision. It can be expected that he takes
all of his official visits before making another, lasting decision."
