Olivier Vernon made a decision that he thought was a no-brainer. He had
grown up in the backyard of one of the top teams in the country and figured that
it was his duty to play for the team that had captured his heart and his loyalty
as a young child. However, once the #9 rated Defensive End realized that
the world (in fact) did not end at the Dade County line, a world of
possibilities was made available. Add to this the fact that several major
BCS powers coveted his services, and it is easy to see how the Hialeah-American
Senior (FL) star began having second thoughts. Scout caught up to the
playmaking DE to get the latest on the season and recruiting.

| Vernon has become a hot prospect and has
cooled on his commitment to the 'Canes |
How is the season going?
"We're 1-4 but I haven’t been playing," he
said. "I got hurt the first game when I rolled my ankle."
How is that?
"I'm rehabbing
it and it's getting better.
Are you expected back soon?
"I'm not trying to rush into it and hurt myself
more," he shared. "When I am 100%, I’ll come back."
In a bit a of a shocker, you
backed off a bit on your commitment to Miami. How does that stand
and where do you go from here?
"I am still a soft verbal," he said.
"And I am going to take my visits during the season, so I can make sure
about everything."
My decision will come after those visits, but since I'm
graduating early, I will have to make it after my last visit. I would say
probably in December."
You have mentioned visits that you will be taking in an
attempt to make the right decision. Can you tell me where you will go and
then add a few words about the school?
|
Florida State—staying in contact, trying to
show me what they have to offer up there. |
| USF—coaches cool—want to see what
they got….don't know too much about them yet.
|
|
Alabama—want to know more |
|
LSU—talked to Coach Henson (TE), and I like
the academics... |
|
Wisconsin or Pitt—trying to decide |
| Miami—that drew me in that they're in my
backyard...I grew up following them and have already gone on an unofficial visit. I was
kind of amazed and it really blew me away |
It has been my experience that early decisions often carry a lot of weight,
similar to the phenomenon of "first love". While some prospects get
caught up in the moment and make rash decisions, most make that decision based
on years of having invested quite a bit of loyalty. Vernon seems like an
intelligent young man and he will certainly do his homework on this one.
In the meantime, so will we.
