It is a special award to be named the Pinellas County (Tampa Bay)
Defensive Player of the Year but to win it twice is unheard of.
"I
do not know what to say," stated the back to back Tampa Bay Times
Defensive Player of the Year, Mike Marry. "I wish we could have won a ring,
but we fell one game short. The individual awards are nice, but I can't help but
think how much sweeter it would be with a state championship on my resume."
The
6' 3", 220 pound middle linebacker is one of the more coveted players in
Florida as he holds over 20 BCS offers. Mike has the whole package, as he is able
to stuff the runners, while also having the ability to drop back in coverage and
play like a defensive back.
"I have always been blessed with speed,
but I really worked hard in the offseason to work on my explosion and it paid
off. I felt a step quicker this year."
Mike finished the season with
100 tackles, 7 sacks, and 1 interception. Last season, he collected 122 tackles,
4 sacks, and 1 interception.
The Largo standout has had four inhome visits
this past week.
"Duke, Stanford, Ole Miss, and UConn have all been
by my house this week. I had a good talk with all of those schools."
What
did Duke have to say?
"This was the second time they have been by
my house. They brought over their LB coach, Jim Collins. They also brought over
their defensive coordinator, Mike McIntyre and their wide receiver coach, Derrick Jones. They pretty much spoke about their education. They are one of the top academic
institutions in the country. I also have a good chance to play there as a freshman.
Those were the main things they spoke about."
What stood out during
the inhome?
"I like the coach's personality. I think Coach McIntyre
is a good coach, and he is fun to be around. And besides, I could get the best
education in the country while playing football (laugh). That's not a bad thing."
How
did the Ole Miss inhome visit go?
"Coach Vaughn came by, and he spoke
about their education programs. He talked about the people I would be around.
We talked a little about football, but we mainly talked about their academic programs."
What
stood out?
"I like it that Ole Miss is so concerned about my education.
No matter what happens, I know Coach Vaughn will be there for me, no matter if
I go or do not go to school there. We have that relationship that goes past football.
I also know Dexter McCluster well. We went to school together at Largo. He loves
it up there and is always talking it up. I think I have a good opportunity to
play and it is in a good location where there is not any crime. You can concentrate
on your books and football."
What about the Stanford inhome visit?
"The
main thing we talked about was their education and the opportunities it would
present me if I did not make the NFL. You can get a good job right out of college
with a stanford degree."
What issue did Mike like most with the Cardinals?
"I
like their education program and coaches, especially Coach Willie Taggart."
Who
else is involved?
"I get a lot of calls from everybody. West Virginia
and Ohio State also came by the school this week."
What did they say?
"They
want me to try and line something up in January, for me to come up there."
Who
is coming after the Tampa Bay resident the hardest?
"I would say Stanford,
Duke, Iowa State, and Ole Miss. Those four are pretty much the same."
What
stands out about Iowa State?
"I just liked the coaches and environment
when I visited. I liked everything about it. I really liked Coaches Chizik and
Cullan. Coach Chizik called me after he took the Auburn job. He said he still
wants me."
