The 5' 9", 210 pound athlete from Lithonia is one of the more coveted prospects in south Georgia. He was named the 2007 Class 5A and Region 6AAAAA Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Georgia after collecting 153 tackles.
But his talents do not stop on the defensive side of the ball, as Joel Kight has
also been a force at tailback for King High. Which position is he better suited
for?
"I lot of the recruiters like me at outside linebacker, but because I am
not your prototypical LB being 5' 9, 210, some are recruiting me as a running
back," added Joel Kight.
Kight moved all around his senior season.
"I played good. I had 115 tackles. Three or four games, they moved me to
safety. That is why my numbers are down. But I will do anything for the team.
It was fun playing safety. I had three or four picks there. It was fun."
Joel will play in the DeKalb County All-Star game at running back.
"It is not like I have never played RB. I had 32 TD's at tailback the last
two years. I will play anywhere. I just want to be on the field."
Joel has already visited Boston College (10/18), Oklahoma State (12/10), and Georgia Tech (12/17), but he is waiting on his last visit to make a decision.
"I am going to go over to Ole Miss this weekend, and then I will make up
my mind. I doubt I will take a fifth visit. My dad just got a new job, and it
is too hard for him to get off."
What will he be looking for while on his visit to Ole Miss?
"Some of the big things, like how I get a long with the staff and the players.
I know a lot of the players I meet on the team I will not be around for a long
time, so the coaches are probably more important. I know they have a good education
system. But above all else, I want a chance to play. Ole Miss is not close to
Georgia, so I do not want a long ways to drive unless I have a chance to play
(laugh). That will be the most important thing with me, playing time."
Who needs Joel the most?
"I feel like Boston College has two freshmen running backs, but they are
telling me I am number one on their running back and linebacker board. Oklahoma
State, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech. They are all telling me they really need me, but
you have to find where is best for me."
Has Kight taken a visit and said to himself, "this is where I fit in best?"
"Not really because what I want to do is see Ole Miss first, and then I will
sit down. The three visits I have been on, I liked them all, but I have not sat
down and gone over the pluses and minuses because I wanted to see Ole Miss first.
Honestly, I can see myself at all four of those schools. I will take my Ole Miss
visit and put it on paper. I will be able to visually see it then."
Any home visits the past week?
"Georgia Tech came by on Wednesday and Ole Miss came by on Thursday."
Have any head coaches been by Joel's house?
"Not yet, but Coach Gundy (OSU) and Nutt (OM) are suppose to come by next
week. The Boston College head coach said he wanted to be the last head coach to
see me, so I am not sure when he is coming."
