Keith Wells, the 6-foot-5, 207-pound four-star defensive end from Gainesville, Ga., says he has over 20 scholarship offers and has narrowed his choices to six.
Wells, ranked No. 58 in the Southeast by Scout.com, favors Florida State solid over Florida, Ohio State, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Auburn. All of his favorites have offered as well as Tennessee, Alabama, Louisville, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Central Florida, Marshall and several others.
"I love Florida State's legacy of having great defensive players," Wells said. "They send guys to the NFL and I love the location. Also, coach Bobby Bowden is like the winningest coach in college football and you can't go wrong with them."
While admitting the 'Noles are his top choice, Wells also has a lot of praise for the Gators. "I like everything about them," Wells said. "The campus, the coaches…what's not to like about them. It's a real nice campus and everyone seems really friendly. I also like how close the players are with the coaches."
Wells camped at Florida, as well as Georgia and North Carolina. The only school in his top five that he hasn't been to is Ohio State. "They are a great football program and they have a great head coach in Jim Tressel," he said. "I've heard that the campus and facilities are amazing and that they would blow me away."
Growing up, Wells says he followed Auburn. "I liked watching them," he said. "They went undefeated a few years ago and I like the players that have gone through there."
Wells lives only about 40 miles from the Georgia Tech campus and says he doesn't plan on going too far from home. "Distance isn't a big factor, but I'd rather not goo too far because I want my mom to see me play."
He says he plans on making a decision before the end of August. "The campus is gonna be important," Wells said. "I want to get that feeling when I'm there. I also prefer to be in a football town. I want everyone to support the team and be in that kind of environment."
Wells finished his junior season with 52 tackles and 12 sacks. He benches 295 pounds, squats 410 and has a 33-inch vertical jump. "I use my hands really well and can shed blocks," Wells said. "I use my speed and athleticism to get to the quarterback and make a lot of plays.
"I want to work on defending the run and my quickness, especially my initial get off speed."
He reports a 3.1 core GPA and is still waiting on the results of the June ACT.
