Biography:
Coach R.C. Slocum is the architect of the most successful decade in the history of Texas A&M football and he is in his 14th season as the head football coach at Texas A&M. The Aggies finished the 1990's with 94 victories, the most by any Division I football program in the State of Texas in any decade.

Slocum served 19 years as a college assistant coach in three major conferences before getting the nod as the Texas A&M head coach on December 12, 1988. He served two years at Kansas State in the old Big-8 Conference; one year at Southern California in the PAC-10; and 16 years at Texas A&M in the old Southwest Conference.

Slocum was born on November 7, 1944 in Oakdale, Louisiana. At the age of one years old, he and his family moved to Texas. He played high school football for West Orange Stark, but went to McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana to play college football. At McNeese, Slocum was voted as the team's most valuable lineman in 1967 as a tight end when he caught 33 passes for 471 yards to establish records for both feats.

Slocum was presented with the Houston Touchdowner of the Year Award in 1999. Previous winners included Darrell Royal, Roger Staubach, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Dana X. Bible, Johnny Unitas, John David Crow, and Tom Landry.

He has been active in numerous charities, including the Chairman of the Children's Miracle Network in Central Texas; The Grand Marshal of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade; and he served three years on the American Football Association Rules Committee.

Slocum has two sons, Shawn and John Harvey. Shawn is a 1987 Texas A&M graduate and is a member of his Texas A&M coaching staff. John Harvey is a student at Texas A&M University.

Slocum is married to the former Nel Jennings, who has one son, Randy.
