| When John Cooper was dismissed as the head coach of the Ohio State
football team in January 2001, Youngstown State head coach Jim Tressel
(left, Allsport photo) did not immediately come to mind as the prime
candidate. After all, Coach Tressel was a Division I-AA coach, and
most fans were looking for a marquee name to come fill the spot.
But as it turned out, Coach Tressel was chosen to be the best man for
the job. Loved in the Youngstown area and revered by the coaching
community across the state, Coach Tressel brings a true Ohio flavor to
the OSU head coaching position.
Notes:
- Won national titles at Youngstown State in
1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997
- Six-time Ohio Coach of the Year and Won
National Coach of the Year honors in 1991 and 1994 from the American
Football Coaches Association and was 1993, 1994 and 1997 Chevrolet
National Coach of the Year
- Has been in college coaching since 1975... has
spend time as an assistant at Akron, Miami (OH), Syracuse, and Ohio
State
- Compiled a 142-62-2 record at YSU, including a
run of 103-27-2 in the 90s
- Born Dec. 5, 1952 in Mentor, OH, spent most of
his childhood living in Berea, OH
- Father was a football coach at Baldwin-Wallace
as well as Mentor HS and Massillon HS
- Played football from 1971-1974 at
Baldwin-Wallace
- Is married with two sons and two daughters
