| Nicholson eclipsed the 500 career tackles mark in mid-season of senior year and recorded well over 170 tackles for the third year in a row. As a junior, Nicholson had 181 tackles, 27 tackles for a loss, three picks and 10 sacks. His father,Darrell, played LB for North Carolina and he also played in the NFL with the New York Giants. His brother (A. J.) is a standout linebacker for the Florida State Seminoles. Nicholson earned All-State, All-Region, and All-Conference honors as a Junior. Nicholson carries a 3.2 GPA and has a 19 ACT. He bench presses 340 pounds, squats 500 and has a vertical jump of 32-inches.
Nicholson: "I read well and I attack the line of scrimmage. I'm a playmaker and move good sideline-to-sideline. I want to work on getting better separation and playing at a faster pace. I want to improve every aspect of my game."

Coach's Comments: "Derek is a very physical, fast linebacker," says Mount Tabor head coach Bob Sapp. "He has great speed and movement to the ball, but he is also a great person off the field as well. His parents will not let him slack off in the classroom."
