Smith Excited About College Future
Preston Smith profile "Our season is over," said Preston. "We didn't play like we should have at the end of the year. It seems like some guys we're doing their own thing. "We started playing as individuals and it cost us." Smith was happy with his play this season, but far from satisfied. "I feel like I played good, but I could have done better," said Preston. "I want to get off blocks better and that's something I wished I would have done better this year." Just over six weeks ago, Smith committed to Mississippi State bringing an end to his college recruitment. Since that time most of the schools that were in pursuit have moved on to other options. "A couple of schools are still coming after me, but I am definitely solid with Mississippi State," said Preston. "West Virginia really wants me to come, but I am done with recruiting." The talented defensive end maintains regular contact with his future position coach, Chris Wilson. "I talk to Coach Wilson every week," said Smith. "We talk about their game and what I am doing now and who they are playing each week. "He talks with me about their preparations for their next game and about what they have planned for the future." Preston committed to Mississippi State before he ever visited the campus, but he was able to get the guided tour of all things Maroon a few weeks back. "I went to the game when they played Kentucky," said Smith. "I loved it. I feel like I really fit in there. That was my first visit there. I really liked the atmosphere. The people are real friendly and everybody seems to want to help you out." The Georgia native says that the staff at Mississippi State, especially Coach Chris Wilson make him feel wanted. "Coach Wilson says I am a real go getter," said Preston. "He likes how I get off the ball and come off the edge. "They were hoping I could graduate early. They wanted me to get in and start getting adjusted to the system. He wants me to be college ready, so I can get into the rotation next year." Smith has not finalized his official visit plans, but he expects to do so in the near future. "They want me to come up there for my visit when they are having their bowl practices," said Preston. "I am not sure when that is going to be, but I know it will be sometime in December. "I am ready to get back over there."
