USA Lands Commitment
Quarterback Grant Powell of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis gave the Jags his pledge this past week. The strong-armed 6'3" 202lb signal caller completed 51.4% of his passes for 1084 yards and 12 TDs and ran for 481 yards and three scores. He has competed in many prospect camps and has won praise for his athleticism (he has been clocked at 4.59 40-yard dash and a 34" vertical jump), accuracy and feel for the position. When asked why he chose the Jaguars, Powell responded in the same way that so many other South Alabama recruits have in the past. "I've built a great relationship with the coaches there," he said. "It's just an unbelievable school. I like how they're young and they've been winning. It's a good feeling down there right now." Also helping Grant choose Mobile as his destination is the fact that his father is former Baldwin County High School and Ole Miss quarterback Kelly Powell. The elder Powell competed against USA head coach Joey Jones in high school and college and they were teammates in the 1984 Senior Bowl. Grant Powell had visits to Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Southern Mississippi, Arkansas State and was recruited by many other schools, including an offer from his hometown Memphis Tigers, but USA won out over the competition. "South Alabama felt like home to me. I just wanted to go ahead and commit," he said. While USA is currently set with C.J. Bennett and Myles Gibbon, when Powell gets his chance he should be a good fit with offensive coordinator Greg Gregory's spread/pro hybrid. He, along with fellow commitments Steven Foster, Daniel Aust and Terrance Jones, have the 2012 signing class off to a great start that indicates a very promising future.
