All-State Player Talks Miami Commitment
"I'm not one for personal awards," the 6'2, 220 lb. run stopper told RedHawk Insider, "I'm thankful for the honor, but it's a team sport and that's what we're focusing on." Mike Svetina and his St. Ignatius squad is coming off a down year, but is well ranked going into the fall thanks in large part to his 163 tackles, 3 interceptions and pair of forced fumbles a year ago. One of only four defensive juniors to make the all-state team, Svetina is focusing on the future rather than past successes. "This summer I'm working on adding speed and strength along with getting off blocks and tackling," he said. And while this season is his first priority, Svetina is excited to head to Oxford next summer. "It's definitely the best fit for me. I love the coaching staff, the defense is really strong, and it's just a very comfortable place. Miami just brings a great family-oriented feeling," he said. Svetina also mentioned the quality education he'll be receiving at the new Farmer School of Business. Defensive Coordinator Pete Rekstis, whom Svetina said recruited him, has inherited a strong returning corps in Oxford, but has built a quality future as well. "I've met fellow commits Kent Kern, Jimmy Rousher and Jay Mastin at camps this summer, they're all good guys and great players. The defense in this recruiting class is very strong," said Svetina. For now, Svetina will focus on his senior season, but Miami fans await the arrival of their All-State verbal commitment.
