Golden "Probably" to Announce Next Week
Cheshire (Conn.) Academy standout Malik Golden will announce his college decision next week, but only after he makes an unofficial visit to Penn State on Friday. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Golden will choose from the Nittany Lions, Iowa, Connecticut and Boston College, and while he has a very good feel for how things could play out, he is waiting until after his weekend visit to finalize things. "I'm pretty close, but I haven't taken my unofficial to Penn State yet," Golden said. "After I get there, I'm going to know more about my decision. I want to see how the players and coaches react to each other, see how they practice, talk to the academic advisors, sit down with coach (Joe) Paterno and go from there." Golden previously said he wanted to announce his decision before the start of his senior season, and he is prepared to follow through with it. "I'm probably going to announce next Tuesday or Wednesday," he said. "It's going to be up at my school." One of the interesting aspects of Golden's recruitment is where he will play. Iowa, Boston College and Connecticut like him as a receiver, but Penn State is looking for him to play in the secondary. "Iowa, they were the first to offer me," Golden said. "Coach (Kirk) Ferentz runs the program over there. They definitely coach up their players pretty well." While Iowa and Penn State are lengthy trips for Golden, Connecticut and Boston College have the local pull. "With UConn, it's in my backyard," Golden said. "It would be big for me to go to UConn for a lot of people. Boston College. The academic prestige is pretty big up there." But will distance play a significant role in Golden's decision? "It plays a little bit of a factor, but it won't play that big of a factor," he said.
