Jawand Blue is a standout linebacker prospect from West Boca High and Scout caught up with him to…
Mike's Take: Virginia Tech LB commit
What to Like: Jawand Blue was West Boca's best player last season. Playing outside linebacker, he was all over the place making plays. Athletically, he's very impressive. He can turn and run with most running backs and receivers at the prep level. He can chase down ball carriers from the opposite side of the field. He is very athletic, he's fast, and he often plays fast and makes a lot of plays because of it. No one will ever question his athleticism. He's also a playmaker, who racked up several sacks last season and can also make plays in pass coverage. He plays with pretty good instincts, too, and is just around the football a lot. What may concern you: At 6-feet and under 200 pounds, he lacks ideal size. Sure, he's very fast and athletic and makes a lot of plays in high school but he'll need to add weight and get stronger in order for that to translate. He needs to get more physical when taking on blockers and that will enable him to overcome his size limitations. You also like to see linebackers with his athleticism playing on offense in high school but Blue doesn't really do that. Bottom Line: Virginia Tech has made a living over the years with fast, attacking defenses. Blue fits the mold for Bud Foster's unit. He's an ideal will linebacker in their system and should be considered a very good pickup. Recruited like a solid three-star prospect, Blue had several other BCS offers including UConn, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse. He ended up being one of the more heavily recruited linebacker prospects in south Florida.
