HUEYTOWN, Ala.--And just like that, the high school chapter of the Legend of Jameis "Jaboo" Winston…
Who's Tops in the ACC?
Michigan currently sits atop the Team Rankings less than three months from National Signing Day and the Wolverines are followed by Texas, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Florida to round out the top five. Then, the ACC comes into play. Miami sits at number six followed by Clemson at number seven, then Florida State rolls in at number nine. Virginia and Virginia Tech are currently 16 and 18. Scout takes a look at why each one of these schools are currently where they are on this list. MIAMI HURRICANES Five-Star Commitments: One (Duke Johnson) Other Commitments in Scout300: Five (OT Ereck Flowers, DE Jelani Hamilton, WR Angelo Jean-Louis, OLB Raphael Kirby) Headliner: Duke Johnson. He is a great athlete that just makes plays. He could be a very good corner on the next level, but he is best with the ball in his hands. Sleeper: Dwayne Hoilett. He is an athletic defensive end out of Vero Beach and he has a lot of upside. He has long arms, he is good in pursuit, and he will continue to develop physically. Quick Hitter: Miami will likely fall down the rankings some as we close in on Signing Day. They currently have 27 commitments, the most of any school currently, so others will continue to add names to their list, and some will pass UM in the coming months. CLEMSON TIGERS Five-Star Commitments: None Other Commitments in Scout300: Nine (WR Zac Brooks, DE Martin Aiken, S Travis Blanks, OG Patrick Destefano, S Ronald Geohaghan, WR Germone Hopper, OT Javarius Leamon, WR Cordrea Tankersley, DT Carlos Watkins) Headliner: Carlos WatkiNs. This is a defensive lineman that can move. He has good mobility, he can change direction, and he has a high ceiling. Sleeper: Jay Guillermo. This is a true center who understands the position and he knows how to make the calls and how to get his OL group in the right calls. Quick Hitter: Clemson finished with the 11th best class in 2011 and they are building on that success in 2012. They signed 29 last year, they will not sign that many in 2012. FLORIDA STATE Five-Star Commitments: Four (DE Mario Edward, DE Dante Fowler, RB Mario Pender, and QB Jameis Winston) Other Commitments in Scout300: Eight (WR Marvin Bracy, DE Chris Casher, OLB Markuss Eligwe, TE Christo Kourtzidis, DT Justin Shanks, DT Dalvin Stuckey, OT Alphonse Taylor, S P.J. Williams) Headliner: Jameis Winston. Some feel he could be the best QB in the country, but either way, he is one of the top two. He is a new-age quarterback that can run and throw. Sleeper: Cason Beatty. He can punt or handle kick-offs on the next level and some feel he could be the top punting prospect in the country. Quick Hitter: FSU has a good class going right now, but they have to hang on to some of their best commitments. Mario Edwards could land at Oklahoma and Winston could land at Alabama. Right now, FSU still has the lead, but they need to hang on to the top commits they have. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS Five-Star Commitments: One (OLB Eli Harold) Other Commitments in Scout300: Two (QB Greyson Lambert and DE Michael Moore) Headliner: Eli Harold. This linebacker is rated as the second best at his position in the country. He had offers from schools coast to coast. Sleeper: Kye Morgan. This athlete out of New Jersey is tough and versatile. He could play offense or defense on the next level. Quick Hitter: Mike London is coming off a big win in Tallahassee and he has a chance to finish with a Top 25 class in 2012. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES Five-Star Commitments: None Other Commitments in Scout300: One (RB Drew Harris) Headliner: Drew Harris. Harris is the only four-star prospect on the Hokie commitment list and he is one of the most productive backs in the country. He ran for close to 4,000 yards in 2010-2011. Sleeper: Woody Barron. This 6-3/255 defensive end out of Tennessee is one of those guys who could flourish in the VT system. He is strong, he comes from a good high school program in Tennessee, and he is going to get bigger and better. Quick Hitter: Like most years, Frank Beamer does not have a lot of headliners, but he has a lot of good football players that he will coach up. They likely will not end up in the Top 20, but they will again get a number of good players. Chad Simmons is currently a National Recruiting Analyst for FOX Sports/Scout.
