Chris Taylor comes across as an humble and down to Earth young man. When the Friday Lights come on…
CoachSpeak: Neil Weiner of Zachary
6-2, 300 pound offensive lineman Chris Taylor is beginning to draw interest from SEC programs. "Recruiting wise, Chris has gotten some letters and a few phone calls," said Coach Weiner. "He went to LSU's junior day last weekend. "He said that went real well. "He went to camp at Alabama and he did a real good job there. They put him in the group with their prospects and he competed really well. "We spoke to the coaches at Alabama and they spoke highly of him." The talented Taylor has grown up around the game of football in a football family. "He is a great kid who has a lot of ability," said Weiner. "I think he is a 3.4 GPA. He is going to be a full qualifier. "He is the son of a coach, so he's been around the game for a while. "He has had some older brothers and some cousins that have played on the college level. "He is a really nice kid, but when you get him on the field he can be pretty nasty." High school coaches are always pushing their players to be better and not simply rely on their athleticism. Taylor will be working hard this spring to refine his skills in hopes of making 2012 the best season of his high school career. "Everybody on our team can improve technique wise," said Weiner. "He has some things he needs to work on like hand placement and things like that. "He has good feet and he is one of the hardest working kids we have. He is super strong. He has a lot of good things going for him. "I would like to see him refine himself at his position and be a better technician." Linebacker Larry Cage won several awards at camps during the spring and summer of 2011. Cage followed those off season events up with a tremendous junior season. College scouts have already reached out to the staff at Zachary to learn more about the talented linebacker. "Larry is very humble and he has a great attitude," said Weiner. "He is a super athlete. "He has run 4.4 a couple of times. I am not sure he is a consistent 4.4 guy, but he can run. "He has great leaping ability and he is a great pass rusher. "We are going to use more as an outside linebacker this year, so we can bring him off the edge. "He is so quick getting off of the edge that it creates a lot of problems for the offenses. "His athleticism allows him to be real active throughout the game and that's probably the best thing about him." College recruiters have shown a lot of interest in Cage and his 6-3 frame and nose for the football. "Most schools want to see film and a lot of people want to get him in camp, so they can see how big he is," said Weiner. "He has great height, but he is just kind of thin. "He sort of reminds me of a shorter version of (Barkevious ) Mingo at LSU. "I am not saying he is at that level, but he has that same sort of body. "I feel like he has a real good chance to be a special player."
